Lot 5 Leo Road, situated in Tropical
North Queensland is a rainforest block only 5 minutes
from Mission Beach.
The land was purchased by the Australian
Rainforest Foundation because over 90% of the land
area is rainforest which provides not only habitat
for the endangered cassowary but also a linkage to
nearby protected areas.
The ARF has undertaken significant
weed control and improvement works on the land and
has re-established the access to potential house sites
and the cleared area of approximately 3 hectares.
The land has been assessed by the
Queensland Environment Protection Agency and will be
sold as a Nature Refuge (pending settlement). This
classification will ensure the perpetual protection
of approximately 90% of the land (all the existing
rainforest) while allowing a reasonable footprint for
a dwelling and other approved rural uses. Nature Refuge
classification also provides opportunities for financial
assistance from the ARF and the Queensland Government,
to maintain the biological diversity of the land.
