Significant impact guidelines for the endangered southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) Wet Tropics population
EPBC Act policy statement 3.15
Released 18/3/2010
The Significant impact guidelines for the southern cassowary (the Guidelines) have been completed. They replace the draft guidelines which have been on the Department’s website since July 2009.
The purpose of the Guidelines is to provide direction on the practical application of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) for the cassowary. The Guidelines provide clear advice about what types of actions are likely to have a significant impact on the cassowary and therefore require approval under the EPBC Act.
The Guidelines present information on how to design activities to avoid or mitigate impacts on the cassowary. Developments that are consistent with the Guidelines, which avoid significant impacts on the cassowary, are less likely to need approval under the EPBC Act.
The Guidelines were published for public comment in July 2009. All public comments were considered in the preparation of the final Guidelines.
The Guidelines are now available on the Department's website at:
