Planting the right tree in the right place.

Tourism campaign commits 2000 trees in 24 hours

A world-first online tourism campaign has exceeded expectations and resulted in more than 2,000 trees being earmarked for planting in the Daintree by the Australian Rainforest Foundation - within 24 hours.

The innovative Tourism Queensland campaign is designed to educate people about the environmental and tourism significance of the Daintree by promising to plant a tree for every five people they tell about it.

“The Daintree is one of Queensland and Australia’s most important tourism destinations generating close to a half billion dollars for the tourism industry every year. This new campaign is about helping people all over Australia and the world discover its beauty and most importantly come and visit,” Desley Boyle, State Minister for Tourism announced in March.

“The fact that we ran out of trees in under 24 hours demonstrates the passion and new level of importance people are placing our natural tourism assets.”

ARF CEO Roger Phillips was ‘astounded’ by the response to this campaign.

“The response just goes to show the strength of the Daintree Tourism product and the growing concern amongst every day Australians to protect our precious environment and fight climate change,” Mr Phillips said.

“The Foundation’s mission is to build awareness and support for our rainforests on a global scale. This initiative will greatly assist the ARF in planting the right tree in the right place which is critical to securing the long-term survival of our old growth rainforest for maximum benefit to the environment.”

Tourism Queensland, Tourism Tropical North Queensland and Port Douglas and Daintree Tourism all contributed funds to purchase trees through the Australian Rainforest Foundation.

These partners will be working with the Australian Rainforest Foundation (ARF) to:

  • Identify parts of the Daintree that needs revegetation;
  • source and purchase the 'right tree for the right place';
  • plant the tree within an agreed timeline; and
  • ensure the ongoing protection of the tree and land by ARF Officers and volunteers.
