ARF Funding for weeds
 |
Residents of the Mission Beach region attended a free ARF weed workshop. |
In November 2007 the ARF, under its Stewardship Payments Program, encouraged landowners and residents of the Daintree and Mission Beach regions to enter into partnerships with the ARF to undertake agreed on-ground works on their properties to improve the local environment.
Many landowners asked the ARF how to best manage the weeds and feral animals on their land. From this, weed management workshops were held and those who attended were then eligible to apply for financial assistance.
Over $10,000 has now been distributed to 16 successful applicants. This money will be used by landowners to purchase herbicides, protective equipment and hand tools. At the same time the ARF is making available to all those who attended the weed workshops, newly purchased spraying equipment and a trailer to dispose of green waste,
All recipients of weed management grants must be willing to develop a basic weed management plan or strategy and be prepared to undertake a regular monitoring and site- inspection program of the works by the ARF over an agreed period.
Further workshops are planned for later in the year.
