Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

With the wet season well and truly with us in far north Queensland (although we would like a bit more rain in the Daintree for our newly planted trees) we can feel Christmas drawing in and would like to take this opportunity to wish all our supporters, friends and colleagues a safe and happy festive season.

We look forward to working together again in 2009 to move further forward in protecting and extending our environmentally critical but disappearing rainforests and doing everything we can to recover rainforest endangered species.

Americans fly in to help save our Big Bird

Over the last 12 months the ARF has been steadily building international awareness of its conservation activities in Australia and raising funds to support these activities from private individuals, corporations and zoos, particularly in the USA, all driven by our USA ARF representative Paul Medici.

In September we were delighted that Paul could join us in Cairns while travelling with Nicole La Greco, Team Area Lead, San Diego Zoo Avian Propagation Center and North American Cassowary Studbook Keeper and Debbie Marlowe, Team Area Lead, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Bird Department.

News from Garners Beach

After two years of overseeing the on-ground management and undertaking fund-raising for the QPWS owned Cassowary Recovery Facility at Garners Beach the ARF withdrew its on-site presence in September.

With lease arrangements coming to an end, the government agency advertised for new lessees under an Expressions of Interest.

Emms Family Donation and Dinner

In July the ARF Board hosted a thank you dinner for Carolyn and Phil Emms and family, founders and owners of hugely successful Australian companies Garage World and Shed Boss who had donated $100,000 to the ARF.

“We just love the rainforest and the wealth of biodiversity,” Carolyn said.

Tourism partners planting day

In our March newsletter we reported on the huge success of an online marketing campaign by joint partners Tourism Queensland, Tourism Tropical North Queensland and Port Douglas and Daintree Tourism which resulted in 3,000 trees being earmarked for planting by the ARF in the Daintree.

Congratulations to new Cassowary Adopter - Redlynch State College Middle School

by Hannah Robertson, Student Council

In 2007, the Redlynch State College Middle School Student council decided to adopt a cassowary because they wanted to support an environmental issue that affected the local area. In that year the Student Council fundraised towards this cause by organising a ‘dress green day’.
